The Warsaw Uprising (August 1 – October 2, 1944) was an armed action of the Polish Underground State against the German occupiers of Warsaw. Organized by the Home Army as part of Operation Storm, its aim was to liberate the capital before the arrival of the Red Army and to reveal the structures of the government in exile. It was the largest military operation of the Home Army, which covered the left-bank districts of Warsaw and the surrounding areas. <\/p>\n
The uprising was both military, aimed against the Germans, and political, directed against the USSR and Polish communists. The Home Army command hoped that the liberation of Warsaw would strengthen the international position of the Polish government-in-exile. Unfortunately, after the outbreak of the uprising, the Red Army halted its offensive on Warsaw, and Allied assistance was limited. As a result, for 63 days, poorly armed insurgent units resisted the much stronger German forces, ultimately resulting in their capitulation. <\/p>\n
Losses among the insurgents amounted to approximately 16,000 killed and 20,000 wounded, while civilian casualties ranged between 150,000 and 200,000. Warsaw was almost completely destroyed, with tragic consequences for Polish culture and national heritage.
