The 1989 Polish parliamentary elections, known as the June elections, took place on June 4 and 18 and were a turning point in the country’s history. These were the first partially free elections after World War II, held as a result of the Round Table Agreements. As a result, 460 members of the Sejm (lower house of the Polish People’s Republic) and 100 senators were elected to the newly established Senate. The Solidarity opposition, organized around the Citizens’ Committee, won a decisive victory, winning all the seats allocated to non-partisan candidates and 99 of the 100 seats in the Senate. <\/p>\n
