Martial law in Poland, imposed on December 13, 1981, was a dramatic event in the country’s history. Its purpose was to suppress growing social unrest and the opposition, primarily represented by the Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity.” As a result of this decision, which was unconstitutional at the time, over 10,000 opposition activists were interned, and over 70 people lost their lives. Martial law was formally suspended on December 31, 1982, and lifted on July 22, 1983.
