The Independent Self-Governing Trade Union “Solidarity” (NSZZ “Solidarność”) is a key organization in Polish history, founded in 1980 in response to the need to defend workers’ rights. It was not only a trade union but also one of the main centers of opposition to the government of the Polish People’s Republic and communism. “Solidarity” organized mass protests that led to the signing of the August Agreements, and its activities had a significant impact on the democratic transformation in Poland and throughout Central and Eastern Europe.
